This pattern for a
Freetrapper Fur Hat is patterned after those drawn by Bodmer, during his visit to the Fur Trading Posts, during the early 1800's. Hats of this kind were worn by Indians and Mountain Men both for protection from the elements and as symbols of status,
coups and/or clans. The pattern comes with complete instructions for making the
Fur Hat with just the body of the pelt, or, as shown with a option for using the face of the animal.
Fur: Use large coyote, fox, bobcat, lynx, racoon or other animals of this size or small wolf, cougar, bear, etc.
Lining Fabric:: Cotton or cotton blends, or light weight wool for a warmer hat.
Brim: Should be a heavy strap leather or latigo.
