This nice .54 caliber percussion carbine is the popular 1859 Saddle Ring Carbine configuration. This carbine has a traditional Sharps 22" tapered barrel, with turned raised ring at the breech, carbine folding ladder rear sight on the barrel, and integral iron blade front sight. This example has a few marks on the stock at the front edge of the comb and the right hand side of the forearm. but otherwise appears to have seen little use. Trigger reach is 13-3/4' to fit todays average size shooter. Weight is 8.3 pounds.
This .54 caliber percussion carbine has a traditional Sharps 22" tapered barrel, with turned raised ring at the breech, carbine folding ladder rear sight on the barrel, and integral iron blade front sight. The .54 caliber bore is bright and has been well maintained. This carbine can be fired with loose ammunition, or with hand made paper cartridges. In fact, some shooters really enjoy making the paper ammunition as much as shooting. A variety of bullets can be used, from round balls to the Civil War Minie bullet. We stock pre-cast Sharps bullets for paper cartridges, available on request, at extra cost.
The walnut stock is straight grain, a good choice for a military rifle. The stock has some marks at the front edge of the comb, but it otherwise as-new. The buttstock is fitted with a color case hardened patchbox. Our top view shows the nice color cased action with sling bar and ring. The saddle ring is a military feature. Cavalry troops wore a shoulder strap, clipped to this ring, to prevent loss of the carbine if thrown from a horse. No cheek piece is present. The buttplate is the correct military version. Shaped with a rounded toe. The inletting is fair to good, and the walnut stocks are well finished. This bottom view shows the vivid color case hardening, in a rainbow of mottled colors, on the action and lever. The lever works very smoothly, and has a positive return, and military style finger latch.
The action of the photo shows the blue and gray swirls on the color case hardened action. The lock plate is shaped as if it had a Lawrence pellet primer. The action operates smoothly, and big lock has a strong mainspring. The finger shaped lever, at the front of the action, may be rotated and withdrawn, to dismount the lever and breech block, for easy cleaning. Once apart, you will discover that the face of the breech block is rectangular plate, sleeved to the breech block. Pedersoli has added a o-ring behind the plate to assist in sealing. Remove the breech block, and nipple, and clean these in hot soapy water at the end of each day's use. Apply a tiny amount of Birchwood Casey's Choke Tube Lube, or graphite grease, or anti-seize grease, and reassemble the gas check, breech block, and lever, into your rifle.
