This classic American flint longrifle captures the style of the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania gun makers. Stocked in curly maple, trimmed in iron furniture, with a 38" Getz swamped barrel, this .40 caliber rifle will be a joy to shoot. This rifle is offered as used with a bright well maintained bore, and was built by contemporary builder J. Goodoien. Trigger reach is 13-1/2" to fit today's average size shooter. Weight is 8.3 pounds and this rifle points naturally when shouldered. This rifle comes with a stainless steel loading rod with aluminum handle and brass .40 caliber jag.
The .40 caliber by 38" swamped octagon Getz barrel has a bore that is bright, clean, and ready to shoot. The bore is cut rifled with seven lands and grooves with a slow twist for patched round ball. The 38" swamped octagon barrel is thickest at the breech for strength, tapers to a narrow waist to reduce weight, and flares at the muzzle to align the sights. The barrel is finished to a chocolate brown. The top flat is stamped J. Goodoien / Blaine MN just behind the rear sight. A browned iron blade front sight is dovetailed 1-1/2" behind the muzzle, and a flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" ahead of the breech. A single polished bright bolt passes through the flared tang and stock to engage the trigger plate below. Three small iron pins retain the barrel to the forearm.
The curly maple stock is finished to a medium brown with reddish undertone. The mid 18th century styled buttplate is wide, flat, and comfortable to aim. It engages your shoulder to minimize the felt recoil of this .40 caliber rifle. The buttplate comb is shaped with three broad flats and a wedding band. The push button for the patchbox release can be seen in the center of the buttplate comb when viewed from above. The transition from the comb to wrist is decorated with incised carving that flows down into the wrist and terminates along the molding along the toe of the stock. The iron patchbox is polished bright and is engraved with a flower. Push the button in the buttplate comb and the patchbox door opens to reveal a cavity for flints, jags, or other shooting accessories. Incised carving decorates the buttstock and surrounds the patchbox, which a large flower found at the front matching the engraved flower on the patchbox.
Our bottom view of the rifle shows off the polished bright and engraved toeplate. In addition to its decorative factor the toeplate adds a level of protection to the wood when the toe comes in contact with the ground when loading and cleaning. The iron triggerguard is browned to match the barrel and is pinned to the stock in traditional fashion. A raised molding runs along the forend of the rifle and terminates just ahead of the forward ramrod pipe. The forearm follows the contours of the swamped barrel with a large flare towards the muzzle. No muzzle cap is fitted to protect the end grain of the forearm. The wooden ramrod is fitted with a steel tip with 10-32 threads to mount loading and cleaning accessories, and the opposite end is fitted with an iron loading tip. We note the ramrod extends 3/8" past the muzzle. The ramrod is held in place with two browned iron octagon shaped ramrod pipes with bands on each end, and matching entry pipe. A backside view of the rifle shows off the browned iron sideplate that has been used on the rifle. Only one lock bolt is used to secure the lock on the opposite side. The front bolt hole is filled with a bolt blank. Further back on the gun the classic squared cheek provides the shooter with a comfortable platform to align sights. The buttstock is decorated with incised carving in a floral pattern. The cheek is shaped with a molded edge. A raised line runs along the bottom of the buttstock from the trigger plate back to the toe.
Ignition is provided by a large Siler flintlock that is browned to match the barrel. This lock captures the styling used on many American longrifles. Most flint locks were imported from England or Europe, for use by American gunmakers. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English gun flints for use in this lock, our #FLINT-ENG-6. The stainless steel touch hole liner is properly positioned on the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The curled single trigger provides a smooth release of the lock and is decorated with a pierced heart shape.
This .40 caliber Lancaster rifle will be a joy to shoot in your next shooting competition, or on upcoming small game hunts. The Getz barrel is bright, clean, and ready to shoot! Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund. Postage is your only risk, when you order any one-of-a-kind gun from Track, whether new, used, or antique.
