The famous U. S. Model 1863 contract musket was made by Remington. Unlike Springfield or Enfield muskets, this model is trimmed in brass, with a patchbox and folding leaf rear sight with three leaves, for 100 yards, 200 yards, and 300 yards. This 1863 Rifled Musket was manufactured in Spain for Connecticut Valley Arms Co. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" for today's average size shooter. Weight is 9.5 pounds. This example appears to be unfired, but does have a drying check on the right hand side of the buttstock at the buttplate heel.

Not well known today, the elite Zouave troops of 1860 were dressed in Arabian style uniforms, after the fierce fighters that the U. S. encountered when we fought the pirates of Tripoli, who paid little attention to "the rules of war". It was a high honor to be accepted into a Zouave unit. Our Commando units and Green Beret units are modern equivalents of Zouave troops. Locally, we had the Saint Anthony Fire Zouaves, a famous unit. Saint Anthony was the old name of Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The .58 caliber tapered round 33" barrel is rifled with three equal lands and grooves, exactly like the original musket. The barrel is finished to a dark blue. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. The correct three leaf military sight is fitted, but unmarked on the leaves. This correct rear sight makes this rifled musket legal for NMLRA "as issued" military musket matches. The leaves move freely on this example.

Stocked in beech stained as walnut. The stock does have a drying check on the right hand side of the stock at the buttplate heel, but otherwise appears to be in as-new condition. The brass patchbox is retained with three blued steel screws, as original. Opening the patchbox reveals a cut cavity to store a spare musket nipple and patch worm. The unmarked buttplate comb, should have a U.S stamp. The correct V over P proof mark of Springfield Armoury stamped at the breech, have also been omitted. The modern Spanish proof marks (required by their law) are stamped on the small flat on the left side at the breech. The top of the barrel is marked Connecticut Valley Arms - Black Powder Only - .58 Cal. Spain. The rounded toe of the stock appears as new, and this area is one of the most commonly marked areas on military rifles. The barrel is secured with two brass barrel bands with forward mounted band springs. The steel ramrod is shaped with a flared tulip tip and has male threads on the hidden end. Two brass sideplate washers are inlet flush into the stock, and counter bored to accept the two lock bolts. The brass triggerguard is fitted with a correct swivel for your military style leather sling.

The percussion lock plate is stamped with a eagle and finished to a dark blue. The lock has a strong mainspring and a smooth release. The breech is fitted with a 8-1.25mm threaded nipple for a musket cap. If you require a spare order our nipple #EMI-I, use the #NW-100 nipple wrench to install the nipple.
